RANCH RODEO

Ride for the Brand is the largest ranch rodeo sanctioned by the Working Ranch Cowboys Association and is all about real working cowboys and their peers. Proceeds benefit local ranchers and their families through the WRCA Foundation's Scholarship Fund, Cowboy Crisis Fund & Wildlife Relief Fund, along with local military charities.

Ride for the Brand was formed in 2003 to showcase our own local ranch cowboys and to give back to the foundations that support them. These cowboys work all week on their ranches, sorting and moving cattle, starting colts, doctoring and branding calves - and they ride for the legendary brands that still represent the heart of America's livestock industry today.

The WRCA's mission is to promote ranching on a national and international level and to preserve the lifestyle of the working ranch cowboy. Ride for the Brand Ranch Rodeo has donated over $100,000 to the WRCA Foundation over the past 10 years.

Ranch Rodeo Events

Ranch Bronc Riding

The performance starts with the classic ranch rodeo event, Ranch Bronc Riding. This event is similar to Pro Rodeo’s Saddle Bronc competition where a cowboy has to ride a bucking horse for eight seconds. There are a couple of differences between Pro Rodeo and Ranch Rodeo bronc riding. In Ranch Rodeo, the cowboy rides the same saddle he uses every day on the ranch. The cowboy is also allowed to use a Night Latch - which means he can hang on to the saddle. This event is the only Ranch Rodeo event that is scored by a judge. A winning score is usually in the 80’s out of a possible 100 points.

Wild Cow Milking

The Wild Cow Milking event is a fan favorite. The event starts with one person horseback and three team members on foot. A cow is released into the arena, and the roper chases the cow while on horseback and ropes the cow. The three teammates then grab the cow, and one designated teammate milks the cow into an empty bottle. When the milker believes they have enough milk, they run to a circle to meet with the judge. The timer stops when the milker enters the circle. The judge will pour the milk to verify the time. No milk - no time. The team that can get all of this done the fastest wins.

Stray Gathering

The Stray Gathering event demonstrates how cowboys rope and tie a steer out in the pasture for doctoring. Four cowboys on horseback enter the arena while two cattle are turned out at the far end of the arena. Each team is required to rope the head and heels of each steer. The cowboys then get off of their horses, and both cattle are then tied down by a minimum of three legs. The cattle have to remain tied for six seconds for the team to get a score. The team with the fastest time wins.

Calf Branding

The Calf Branding event simulates the work that happens on the ranch every year when new calves are branded. During this event, there are two branding pits. Two teams enter the arena at one time. One member of each team rides their horse into the herd, ropes the heels of a calf, and drags it across the line to his ranch’s branding pit. The flankers will flank the calf and brand it with chalk. Time will be individually kept for each team, and time will be called when the second calf is branded and the iron returned to the bucket.

This event occurs during Slack. We hold two events earlier in the day during what we call Slack. This helps keep the evening rodeo performance to a reasonable amount of time. Points earned in these two events do count toward the team’s overall score. Slack is open to the public and is held in the main arena. It begins immediately following the team meeting at noon on Saturday.

Team Sorting

The Team Sorting event tests the cowboy’s ability to sort a specific cow out of a herd. The event starts with a small herd of numbered cattle at the far end of the arena. The cowboys must enter the herd on horseback and sort the cattle out of the herd in order. The goal is to do this quickly without stirring up the herd. Once the cattle are sorted out, they naturally want to return to the herd, so the cowboys have to keep an eye on the ones who may be trying to get back into the herd. If any cow crosses the line out of order or comes back after being sorted out, the team will receive a "no time." The winning team will have the fastest time.

This event also occurs during Slack. Points earned in Team Sorting also count towards the team's overall score.

Trailer Loading

The final event of the ranch rodeo is a fan favorite. Trailer Loading event starts with a herd of cattle at the far end of the arena. The team rides in and must sort their numbered cow out of the herd, push only that cow across the line, then rope it. That’s when the fun begins - the team must then load the cow, who really doesn’t want to be in the trailer, into the trailer, get two horses loaded into the trailer, close the trailer doors, and then all four people must be in the cab of the pick-up with the doors closed for time to be called. The team who can do all of this in the shortest amount of time wins.
